Michele Fortunato co-founded Brown & Fortunato, P.C. in 1995, after practicing as a transactional lawyer for nine years in Houston and Amarillo. Michele has demonstrated skill as a business attorney and warmth as a citizen of the Amarillo community.
As an attorney at Brown & Fortunato, P.C. Michele's practice includes corporate, real estate, trademarks, technology and business law. She has expertise in business transactions involving sales and acquisitions of businesses and conversions of existing entities. Her technology practice includes software licensing and distribution agreements, privacy matters, trademarks, copyrights, domain name counseling and acquisitions, and organization and capitalization of technology companies. She represents borrowers in complex financial transactions in negotiating and closing credit agreements. She also represents many financial institutions on real estate loans, commercial loans, and regulatory matters. She provides corporate counsel for privately owned concerns and publicly traded companies in connection with the organization and creation of entities, mergers and acquisitions. Her real estate practice includes representing buyers and sellers of commercial real estate, residential real estate and ranches, title companies, developers and construction companies.
Michele comes from a family of proud Italian heritage and is a second generation Italian-American. Her grandparents immigrated from Italy in the early 1900s, arriving at Ellis Island, New York, to begin life in the United States as factory workers. Her parents grew up and married in Brooklyn, then traveled west to Dallas, Texas, where Michele was born and raised.
Michele enrolled as an undergraduate at Texas Tech University and received a B.A. in English and History in 1973. She began her professional career as a school teacher, teaching middle school and high school English for four years before becoming a legal assistant. Michele joined a large Houston law firm and worked as a banking legal assistant, prior to attending law school.
At the University of Houston Law Center, Michele achieved academic success and was selected for the Houston Law Review where she served as a Research Editor. She was admitted to the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Barons. Michele received her J.D. in 1986, graduating cum laude.
Michele is currently serving as President of the Amarillo Area Bar Association. Outside her legal career, she has consistently demonstrated her dedication to civic and community service. Her involvement in the Amarillo community has included service on the boards of several non-profit organizations. In May 2004 Michele was elected a Regent on the Amarillo College Board of Regents. She is a member of the 2007 United Way Campaign Cabinet. She is a graduate of Leadership Amarillo and has served on the Board of Directors of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, the Amarillo Parks and Recreation Commission, the Board of Directors for Family Support Services and the Opportunity School. She has been active in the Plemons-Eakle Neighborhood Association as well as the United Way Citizens Budget Committee, and worked as an Amarillo Women's Network Mentor. Michele is currently a member of the Texas Association of Bank Counsel, and Center City BPW where she has served as an officer and chaired committees on the local and state levels.
Michele and her husband, David Horsley, share a passion for "old things" and have renovated three historic homes in Amarillo. She enjoys shopping for antiques, auctions, and attending events with Matthew and Rachel, her college-age children.
